The Egyptian Lotus – Spring 2013 Inspiration

Our Spring 2013 collection was inspired by the Egyptian Lotus. It’s no secret that the lotus is a favorite symbol of ours here at Satya. This season, however, we explored the history of the flower, the symbol of new beginnings, and found that we’re not the only one enamored of its meaning.

Traditionally, the Egyptian lotus symbolizes rebirth and creation. This is due largely in part to the physical behavior of the flower.  When dusk arrives, the lotus closes and sinks under water for the night. When dawn breaks, the lotus re-emerges and blooms. How’s that for beauty sleep?

When bloomed, the lotus’s blue petals surround a golden center , imitating the morning sky. Because of this resemblance, Egyptian mythology links the lotus with the story of creation and the sun god. In Buddhism, the lotus symbolizes spiritual awakening, while in Hinduism it is linked to beauty, fertility, and spirituality.

Lotuses are usually found in three different colors: white, blue, and pink. The first two  are native to Egypt., and are depicted often in ancient hieroglyphics. King Tut is said to have had blue lotuses scattered upon his body prior to burial. It was believed that the flower contained 4,000 years of spiritual enlightenment.

The god Nefertem was said to have been born as a lotus flower. In art, he is depicted with a blue lotus on his head, symbolizing beauty.

Rock On – Tucson Gem Show Diary

A huge part of what makes each Satya Jewelry piece so meaningful is the semi-precious stones that add color to our favorite styles. Each year, our design team leaves the blustery cold New York City winter and heads to sunny Tucson, Arizona for the Tucson Gem and Jewelry Show to source stones for upcoming collections. We asked the team to snap away as they toured the show. Here’s their visual diary!

The Arizona landscape

Sometimes, the team has a specific stone in mind (like the glistening emeralds in our upcoming Summer Collection), but at others, they let the beauty of the gems inspire them – they decided on the color palette for Spring 2014 while walking the show!

Stones in every color.

Who couldn’t be inspired by this rainbow wall of raw silk – all options for our Arm Yourself collection?

One of the highlights of the show is seeing the beautiful geodes on display. Like something out of a natural history museum, they are a stunning reminder of the beauty of the earth!

Rohini seems to have found a new favorite chair, but we wonder if it’s as comfortable as it is sparkly

There are more than just gemstones to peruse – the team made time to see some Southwestern style sterling silver jewelry, and even caught this Hanuman statue during their travels.

Hanuman, the monkey god, symbolizes service and loyalty. (And, one of our favorite yoga poses is named after him).

They also spotted a Krishna statue while visiting a vendor from India. We loved how the sterling silver jewelry settings surrounding the statue were similar to traditional southwestern designs.

While browsing through the medley of brightly colored stones and beads, the team noticed a trend of skulls and snakes at every turn. This was exciting news, especially with our Ssssumer (hint hint) collection on its way in a few months.

And, to think, a blizzard was hitting the North east at the same time.

The team (Rohini, Jackie and Roxann), taking in the Arizona scenery despite the storm hitting us back in New York. The snowy weather wasn’t too far from the team’s mind, however, as they also secured stones for the 2013 Holiday Collection, inspired by a very glamorous dress seen on the Golden Globes red carpet. Get ready for a bold and elegant collection – and more clues as we get closer!

Date Night Ideas from the Satya Team

Working for jewelry designers, Valentine’s Day is understandably a big deal around the office. Over the past few weeks, we’ve been chatting about our plans and frustrations for the day. Of course we want to celebrate our relationships! But, do we have to get a reservation at the fanciest place in town to prove our love? We think not. Check out some of the Satya staffers’ ideal Valentine’s Day plans, and get some inspiration for some outside-the-box date nights of your own. Rock climbing anyone?

Marketing Manager, Christina

This year, my husband and I are forgoing a fancy dinner and opting for something we both enjoy – rock climbing! We’ve been hooked on indoor climbing at our local Brooklyn Boulders gym since the summer. It’s an activity we’re both passionate about, and we get to do it together (and hopefully beat the crowds!).

My wife and I are always up for a little friendly competition, and we like keeping things low-key. We’re going to go to our favorite dive bar, The Fat Cat, and have a ping pong tournament while we listen to live jazz. The winner gets to choose where we go for dinner. The best part, it won’t cost more than $50!

Office Manager, Kim

Every Sunday morning, having coffee with my boyfriend is my perfect date. (Donut Shop K-Cups are my favorite). We’re going to Washington D.C. for the weekend. Each year we go on a little romantic getaway. Hopefully this year it will come with a ring!

Every year, my husband and I plan something different. This year was my turn to plan, so I cheated a little and asked our two year old son what we should do. He loves boats, so, I booked us a dinner cruise through Let’s Cruise around New York City (I found it on Groupon!).

E-Commerce Manager, Lauren

We’re going to our favorite burrito joint, Papacitos, where we’ll dine on delicious seitan tacos, chips and salsa and share a lover’s margarita! Afterwards we’ll go to our favorite craft beer bar, Pine Box Rock Shop (they always have new and delicious IPAs). After that, we’ll probably go home and watch reruns of The Big Bang Theory until one of us passes out.

How do you plan to spend Valentine’s Day? Did the Satya team inspire you to try something different this year?

The Perfect Valentine – Satya’s Design Studio

By Danielle Zinner

With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, many men are likely looking for inspiration to guide them to the perfect gift for their one-and-only. Flowers, chocolates and teddy bears are sweet, but far from unique. What better way to celebrate just how special a relationship is than with a truly personal gift that can be enjoyed every day? Enter the Satya Jewelry Design Studio.

When I learned that Satya Jewelry offers personalized necklaces at their Design Studio, I knew it would be perfect for Valentine’s Day. I decided to make my way up to the Satya boutique on the Upper West Side, and try the process for myself. When I arrived, I was greeted by Sales Associate JaVere, who showed me all of the different options for chains, pendants, and semi-precious stones.  After telling him that I wanted a delicate and feminine look, he suggested a 16 inch gold chain, which I could wear with some of my favorite longer necklaces. Note to the guys – the most popular chain length is 18”!

Adding the pendants (including this hamsa!) to the necklace

Next, I chose my charms, which could have easily been a daunting task. With options including stones, letters and sacred symbols, it’s easy to create a piece that speaks to any type of woman. I decided to use “D” pendant for my initial, and accented it with a romantic pink tourmaline and a protective hamsa. A few suggestions for Valentine’s Day gifts include spelling your favorite nickname, incorporating her favorite color, or choosing a symbol that represents the quality you love most about her.

Just some of the options for customizing your necklace.

The options were truly endless – there are literally hundreds of different combinations to choose from, each one with its own personal message. Not only does the process of creating a custom Satya take the stress out of gift-giving, but in the end, you’ll have created a unique piece of jewelry that gives a daily dose of inspiration!
